What vitamins are good for hair loss

A good daily multivitamin containing zinc, vitamin B, folate, iron, and calcium is a reasonable choice, although there is no good evidence that vitamins have any meaningful benefit in alopecia. Newer studies suggest that vitamin D may be somewhat helpful and worth considering. Specific vitamin and mineral deficiencies like iron or vitamin B12 may be diagnosed by blood tests and treated.

VitaminC_4

Multiple vitamins, including biotin, have been promoted for hair growth, but solid scientific studies for many of these claims are lacking. While taking biotin and other supplements marketed for hair, skin, and nails probably won’t worsen anything, it may also not necessarily help the situation. Therefore, advertised hair-regrowth supplements should be approached with mild caution.

Medical Conditions That Can Cause Expanded Hair Loss in Women

hair-loss-grade-women

Women’s hair shown to be particularly sensitive to underlying medical conditions. Since systemic medical conditions often cause a diffuse type of hair fall arrangement that can be confused with genetic balding, it is important that women with undiagnosed alopecia be properly estimated by a doctor specializing in hair loss (i.e., a dermatologist).

Below is a list of medical conditions that can lead to a diffuse pattern of hair loss:

1.Obstetric and gynecologic conditions; such as post-partum and post-menopausal states or ovarian tumors

2.Anemia (iron deficiency)

3.Thyroid disease

4.Connective tissue diseases, such as Lupus

5.Nutritional causes including crash diets, bulimia, protein/calorie deficiency, essential fatty acid or zinc deficiency, malabsorbtion, and hypervitaminosis A

6.Stress from surgical procedures, general anesthesia, or severe emotional problems

Drugs That Can Cause Diffuse Hair Loss in Women

A relatively large number of drugs can cause “ telogen effluvium,” a condition where hair is shifted into a resting stage and then several months later hair loss. Fortunately, this falling is reversible if the medication is stopped, but the reaction can be confused with genetic female hair loss if not properly diagnosed. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can cause a diffuse type of hair loss called “anagen effluvium” that can be very extensive. This hair loss is also reversible when the therapy is over, but the hair does not always return to its pre-treatment thickness.

Hair Shedding in Women & Aging

Many of the factors that cause the rate of loss to speed up or slow down are unknown, but we do know that with age, a person’s total hair quantity will decrease. This is referred to as senile alopecia. Even when there is no predisposition to genetic hair loss, hair across the entire scalp will thin over time resulting in the appearance of less density. The age at which these effects finally manifest themselves varies from one individual to another and is mainly related to a person’s genetic makeup.

The Emotional Impact of Hair Loss for Children

It doesn’t matter the cause or treatment plan, hair loss can be devastating to a child’s emotional health and self-esteem. Children who are arguing hair loss due to alopecia areata, trichotillomania, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or other causes can have an extremely difficult time adjusting to life without hair. In addition to a loss of self-confidence, these children often are ridiculed or bullied due to their baldness or thinning hair.

While your child is undergoing medication, one of the best ways to help her deal with the emotional impact of the hair loss is by wearing a wig. Kids just want their hair back and a wig can do that temporarily until their real hair regrows.

“Children are very sensitive about their view, especially when they are going to school; they try to be more careful about their wig wearing. The hair has to be good quality, as natural as possible, as if it were their own hair”.

Many parents are troubled that wigs won’t be able to withstand a child’s active lifestyle. “Kids are very active so they need something that they can feel very protected in and that feels like their own hair,” Khanis says. “For their cases, Follea has a Gripper Sport wig, which they can be very active in without worrying that it will come off. The Gripper wigs stay securely in place with medical grade silicone tabs, and do not require adhesives that can irritate the skin.”

Before purchasing a wig, try to get a prescription for the wig from your child’s doctor — it may be covered by your insurance. Remember that quality materials when it comes to a wig. A visible, unnatural wig may cause your child to be ridiculed even more by classmates and peers.

Children Hair Loss

Children’s Tinea Capitis

Tinea Capitis is an illness caused by fungal infection of the skin of the scalp, eyebrows and eyelashes, with a tendency for attacking hair shafts and follicles. It is also called “ringworm of the scalp“. The condition is caused by a fungus that occupies the hair shaft and causes the hairs to break. The naked patch of hair loss is often round and the scalp takes on a black-dotted stubble appearing from hair shafts broken off at the surface. There may also be moderate itching and scaling. The condition is transmitted by contact from one infected child to another through the sharing of combs, brushes, hats, barrettes, pillows and bath towels. Minor bruising of the scalp sometimes provides an entry for the microscopic fungus. Children  10 years of age are more susceptible and boys are more so than girls. Ringworm of the scalp is not threatening. Without treatment, however, the hair fall can be extensive, and some children will develop a boggy, tender swelling of the scalp known as a kerion.

alopecia areata

Children’s Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is another common form of patchy hair loss in children. The typical story is the sudden appearance of one or more totally bald areas in the scalp. The child with this condition loses hair in circular patches sometimes up to two inches in diameter. The hair at the lines of these patches is loose, but the peach-colored scalp looks and feels normal, without scaling or inflammation. There may be just a few patches of hair loss or a total absence of body hair. Alopecia Areata is not so dangerous, and children who have it are otherwise healthy. Why the hair shadings out from the roots is still a mystery. What is known is that the condition is not contagious, caused by foods, or the result of nervousness, hyperactive disorders, or psychological stress. In 20% of cases, another family member has been affected. Some patients with this condition will also develop a grid-like pitting of the nails. Fortunately, over 80% children with alopecia areata grow new hair within 12 months. Strangely, the new hair can temporarily be white, but eventually the hair returns to its natural color. This is a much higher resolution rate than is seen in adults with the same condition, so the news is satisfaying.

Children’s Traction Alopecia

Traction Alopecia, or physical damage to the hair, is another common cause of hair loss, particularly in girls. The human hair is quite fragile and does not respond well to the many physical and chemical invasions it has to brave in the name of beauty. Constant teasing, fluffing, combing, washing, curling, blow drying, hot combing, straightening and bleaching can do a number on the fragile hairs, causing them to fall out, especially around the hairline and along the front and sides. In adults, this is not as constant a problem, as the hair has grown in strength and quality over several years, but it can act a problem for our little companions who typically have much thinner, fairer and less dense hair. Styles that apply tension to the hair, such as tight ponytails, braiding, barrettes and permanent waving can also damage the hair. However, one should not estimate that hair loss in one’s child is due to pony tails that are too tight. If hair loss is noted, it is imperative that a physician evaluate the child and rule out other causes. Recommended treatment for children’s traction alopecia is to handle the hair gently, as little as possible, and use natural hair styles. The hair will usually return, but regrowth can be slow. Injured hair follicles do not heal quickly and often take 3 or more months before they are back to their growing phase.
